Ready to gain employmentIndividual Placement & Support
Counseling and Recovery Services of Oklahoma (CRSOK) is implementing the Individual Placement and Support Program (IPS) as one of its services to clients.
IPS provides supported employment and education to individuals with behavioral health challenges. This program is offered by CRSOK through funds provided by Oklahoma Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS). Any client that has a desire to work is eligible for the program and it is very flexible, customized and client driven.
IPS specialists provide direct assistance with work and targeted educational training that will result in competitive employment, based on the individual’s occupational preferences. Specialists also provide support with coordinating transportation, childcare and ongoing treatment and counseling. IPS provides targeted job development and training, and a rapid job search, often resulting in a face-to-face interview with an employer as soon as the client is ready.
“The IPS program’s goal is to create a safe space when clients walk out into the real world, not just while they are in the sanctuary of our facility” said IPS Supervisor Lisa Alford.
According to Sarah Phillips, Program Manager for Specialty Services, the benefits of steady competitive employment for those with behavioral health challenges include increased income, improved self-esteem, expanded social networks, and a better quality of life. Those in the IPS program have reported better control of symptoms, reduced hospitalization, and reduced substance use.
“The IPS program will provide employment opportunities to individuals, no matter their situation. It will also help us to push past barriers that may have prevented someone from employment in the past such as transportation or purchasing uniforms,” Phillips added. “We are really excited to help our clients fulfill their goals and build confidence as part of the working community.”
