Hurt people hurt people. They may also act out at work, home, school, and in the community. Anger, injury, resentment or heartache affects behavior. In children, this behavior frequently shows up at school.

Schools and their staff have become responsible for far more than just teaching. Children come to school without homework, do not pay attention in class and act out against teachers and fellow students. These are symptoms, not the problem. Punitive discipline only adds to the child’s behavior problems. So, the cycle escalates with suspension, expulsion or the child dropping out.

Behind behavior is a host of problems:

  •  Bullying or other mistreatment at school, home or in the community that leads the child to feel unsafe
  • Undiagnosed and  untreated behavioral/ mental health issues
  • Adjustment to divorce
  • Domestic violence
  • Molestation
  • Caregiver(s) with substance abuse and/or mental health issues
  • Incarceration of a loved one
  • Death of a loved one
