The Community Garden at Tulsa Dream Center, a joint project with Counseling & Recovery Services, is shaping up. Missionaries from Dallas area churches helped Tulsa Dream Center Director Tim Newton, Wraparound Tulsa Assistant Director Keith Hall, Care Coordinator Sheena Agyare and Family Support Provider Regina Rogers prepare the beds and till rows for the garden. The next step is getting pebbles and dirt to fill the beds for planting.
Counseling & Recovery Services Executive Director Bryan K. Blankenship and Children’s Program Director Andre Campbell joined Tim, Sheena and Regina in surveying the work completed to date. They discussed ways to finish bed preparations including how to get community groups involved. The goal is to have youth participate by caring for the garden and sharing the produce that comes from it. Tulsa Dream Center is located in an area of Tulsa without a grocery store or access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Eventually, Sheena and Regina plan to show youth how to prepare the healthy vegetables in a tasty way.
Sheena and Regina also are teaching healthy living classes to second through fourth grade children participating in summer camp at the center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This week, children in the classes planted beans in a Styrofoam cup to see who can grow the biggest bean plant. Classes discuss healthy foods and include exercise.
